Trump Administration Steps Up New York Immigration Sweep With More Than 2,100 Arrests

Operation Rotten Apple Marks Major Expansion of Federal Immigration Enforcement. The Trump administration has intensified its immigration crackdown in New York after federal authorities announced that more than 2,100 people had been arrested during a month-long enforcement operation across the state.

The operation, known as Operation Rotten Apple, resulted in 2,197 arrests between July 27 and August 29, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Federal officials said the operation targeted people who were in the United States without legal status, including individuals whom authorities identified as having criminal histories.

Federal Officials Target New York

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced the results of the operation during a news conference in New York, describing it as part of the Trump administration’s broader effort to increase immigration enforcement across the country.

Mullin criticized New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, accusing state and city leaders of failing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. He said the arrests were carried out without assistance from those governments and indicated that additional federal enforcement operations could follow.

Sanctuary Policies Become Major Point of Dispute

The operation has intensified the political clash between the Trump administration and Democratic leaders in New York over so-called sanctuary policies.

Federal officials argue that restrictions on cooperation between local law enforcement and Immigration and Customs Enforcement make it more difficult to detain people sought by immigration authorities. New York officials and immigration advocates, however, have argued that limits on local cooperation are intended to protect residents’ rights and maintain trust between immigrant communities and local authorities.

The dispute is expected to remain a major issue as the administration expands its immigration enforcement efforts in Democratic-led states and cities.

Broader Crackdown Continues Nationwide

The New York operation comes as ICE has increased arrests across the United States. Recent data cited by the Associated Press showed that ICE arrests climbed to nearly 50,000 in July, although more than half of those arrested had not been convicted of crimes or were not facing criminal charges.

That broader trend has fueled criticism from immigrant-rights groups, while supporters of the administration argue that stronger enforcement is necessary to uphold immigration laws and improve public safety.

New York Leaders Push Back

The federal announcement came amid continuing tensions between Washington and New York’s political leadership.

Governor Hochul and Mayor Mamdani have criticized the Trump administration’s immigration policies, while also raising separate concerns over federal funding. Hochul said the administration was withholding millions of dollars in counterterrorism funding from New York, adding another point of conflict between the state and the federal government.

Immigration Enforcement Set to Remain in Focus

The more than 2,100 arrests in New York represent one of the most significant recent federal immigration operations in the state.

Federal officials have signaled that further enforcement actions could be launched, while New York leaders are expected to continue challenging the administration’s approach.

For now, Operation Rotten Apple has placed New York at the center of the Trump administration’s wider immigration crackdown, deepening the political divide over enforcement, public safety and the role of state and local governments in federal immigration policy.
