French Artificial Intelligence Start-Up Mistral Is Worth $6.2 Billion

In barely a year, Mistral—which was founded by former employees of Meta and Google—has raised over $1 billion in capital from investors, resulting in astonishing valuations.

A French artificial intelligence start-up called Mistral announced on Tuesday that it has collected 600 million euros, or roughly $640 million, from investors. This indicates strong interest in the firm, which is viewed as Europe’s most promising opponent to OpenAI and other companies developing artificial intelligence in Silicon Valley.

A person familiar with the transaction claims that Mistral is currently valued at €5.8 billion, an astounding amount for a firm that was created just a year ago by former Google and Meta employees. Since the business raised €385 million in December, its valuation has nearly tripled.

The venture capital firms General Catalyst, Andreessen Horowitz, and Lightspeed Venture Partners, along with Nvidia, Samsung, Salesforce, Cisco, IBM, and BNP Paribas, were among the investors in the most recent round.

Investors have flocked to generative AI technology since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2022. This technology can write software code, generate pictures, and respond to queries in a style like that of a person. Elon Musk raised $6 billion for his start-up, xAI, two weeks ago. Microsoft has contributed almost $13 billion to OpenAI’s fundraising efforts, while Anthropic, a different start-up based in California, has raised about $7.3 billion.
