A Bold New Framework for AI Advancement

During a recent all-hands meeting on Tuesday, an OpenAI representative revealed the new categorization system to the staff. OpenAI, known as the creator of ChatGPT and a leading contender in the race to develop more powerful AI systems, plans to disclose these stages to potential investors and external stakeholders. The levels range from Level 1, representing the current state of AI technology capable of engaging in conversational language with humans, to Level 5, which signifies AI capable of executing organizational tasks.

The Current State and Immediate Future: Levels 1 and 2

According to the representative, OpenAI executives informed staff that the company believes it is currently at Level 1 but is on the verge of entering Level 2, dubbed “Reasoners.” This stage refers to systems capable of performing simple problem-solving activities akin to a doctorate-holding individual without access to any tools. This leap raises intriguing questions about the rapid progression of AI and its implications for various sectors.

Internal Demonstrations and New Capabilities

An anonymous source familiar with the discussions revealed that company leadership showcased a research project involving its GPT-4 AI model during the same meeting. OpenAI believes this project demonstrates new capabilities that hint at human-like reasoning. Although the source was not authorized to speak to the media, the revelation raises questions about the true extent of these advancements. When contacted for comment about the demonstration, the representative mentioned that OpenAI routinely tests new capabilities internally, which is standard practice in the sector. This standard procedure, however, leaves room for skepticism regarding the claimed breakthroughs.

The Pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

Despite these claims, such systems do not yet exist. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has previously stated his belief that AGI might be achieved within this decade. This bold assertion invites scrutiny and debate among AI researchers and the public alike.

Comparing OpenAI’s Framework to Other AI Classification Systems

The standards for achieving AGI have long been a topic of discussion among AI researchers. These rankings are reminiscent of methods used in the automotive industry to evaluate the level of automation in self-driving vehicles. This parallel invites questions about the validity and applicability of such classification systems in AI development.

The Higher Levels: Agents, Innovators, and Organizations

Level 4, “Innovators,” describes AI that can generate novel ideas. The highest level, “Organizations,” encompasses AI that can perform complex organizational tasks. The company plans to gather input from employees, investors, and the board to refine these levels over time.

Conclusion: A Work in Progress

OpenAI’s introduction of a five-stage framework for AI development marks a significant step in the company’s journey towards creating AGI.
